Has July 4th lost it’s meaning?
Have you ever wondered if the 4th of July has lost it’s TRUE meaning? Has it just become another excuse for the general masses to drink like fish and gorge themselves on foods that aren’t exactly healthy for them? Has the general public lost the real meaning of the 4th of July? I look around me and see that it’s promoted about picnics, concerts, drink specials, fireworks and festivals. What’s missing are the moments of silence for those still fighting to uphold the freedom’s we take so easily for granted. Looking back in history simple gatherings of families and communities were the standard for July 4th celebrations dating back into the 1800’s. Call me a simpleton, but I still long for that sense of connection that I enjoyed in my youth growing up in a small Wyoming town. It wasn’t about making money on the beer garden or seeing how much can be profited from parking so that families can view fireworks. It was about sharing, enjoying the company of others, laughing, and relishing in the fact that we live in a country that allows such things to exist. Am I a proud American? HELL YA!!!! Do I believe in my country? HELL YA!!! Do I agree with my government? Well, I don’t HAVE to because I AM an American, but for the most part - YA! I have only lost the taste for the commercialism that has consumed the true meaning of this holiday.
